In last week's blog, I talked about how to increase your chances of achieving those New Year's resolutions. This week, we discover how to buck the trends and ensure your business stays on track this year.

  • Set concrete goals and write them down

    I said it last week, but it's worth repeating as doing this massively increases your chances of success. Once you've set a measurable goal – such as increasing revenue of product X by 10% in 6 months, you need to establish and focus on the activities that will drive you towards achieving that goal.

    Do you need to change your marketing focus? How many more customers will you need?

  • Implement the right systems

    Once you have defined your goals and the activities, you need systems in place to drive the right activity. So, if you have determined you need to increase the number of prospective customers, then how many leads do you need to generate each week and how will this be achieved?

    Create a system that tracks, say, how many calls will be made each day; what each follow-up procedure is, and record the numbers.

  • Allocate appropriate resources to allow you to achieve your goals

    In order to make progress towards your goals, you need to ensure that the right resources are allocated to the right activities. It's all too easy for a disproportionate amount of employee's time to be spent on activities that aren't aligned with company goals.

    If lead generation is a priority, make sure the right amount of time and expenditure is allocated to this area. And say no to activities that aren't supporting your goals!

  • Make sure your entire team are on board

    Ensure all employees are aware of common business goals and their own KPI's for achieving them. Set measurable daily, weekly and monthly goals that allow individuals to track their own progress and know when targets have been achieved.

    This can be very motivating and encourages team members to continue striving toward company goals. Review them regularly at all levels, this is the only way to know if you are on or off track and give yourself time to make changes if necessary.

    Finding out you are off track with a week to go or after the fact doesn't help anyone!
